If you are building a new home or doing a major kitchen remodel, there is a lot more than just cabinets to consider for your new kitchen. You’ll need to decide on countertops, sink fixtures, appliances, and more. When it comes to the style of your kitchen, one of the biggest choices to make is which flooring to have. So, let’s talk. What flooring options are out there? What are the pros and cons of each?

The kitchen floor takes more of a beating than any other floor in the house. There is a high amount of foot-traffic and lots and lots of spills. You want it to look good too! That’s a lot of responsibility for that floor. Luckily you have a lot of options. Here are some of the most popular:

Tile

Pros: With tile, you have a virtually endless number of color/pattern combinations, so you can find a look that really goes well with your kitchen. Tile is easy to clean, which will be important in a kitchen. It is relatively inexpensive.

Cons: Tile floors tend to be colder, so if you are someone who loves walking in bare feet you may consider something else. Tile is slippery when wet, and tiles can break fairly easy if something heavy is dropped on the floor. Tile and grout will require regular cleaning and sealing as well.

Stone

Pros: The biggest advantage to a stone floor in your kitchen is the elegant look. Whether you go with granite, limestone, or a number of other options, the natural stone gives you a great style. These floors are also very durable.

Cons: Stone is expensive. Also, due to the porous nature of stone it will need to be sealed on a regular basis for protection.

Wood

Pros: You can’t match the warm feel that wood floors bring to the kitchen. Wood floors can look good with many different styles, and are often considered ‘timeless’, meaning they wont’ go out of style. They are a bit more comfortable and inviting than stone or tile floors.

Cons: Wood floors can get scratched or dinged easier than the hard floors. Liquid spills can damage the floors so you’ll need to be really good about cleaning them, as well as sanding and refinishing them periodically.

There are a lot of other flooring options out there too. Whatever you choose, don’t forget to consider the style and color of your kitchen cabinets and countertops. If you can tie together all of the elements of your kitchen, you’ll have a space that you never want to leave.
