How to Skin a Cabinet Part 1
Watch How to Skin a Cabinet Part 2
Tools needed:
- Painter’s tape
- Glue or adhesive
Instructions:
- Choose the proper skin for your cabinet and have it nearby on a surface where glue can be applied.
- Lay cabinet on its side on a flat working surface so that you have an even surface to apply the skin.
- Tape off the finished edge of the cabinet on the face. Make sure to not have any tape sticking on the edge so you can apply as much glue as possible on the surface.
- Spray the adhesive on the back of the skin using horizontal strokes. Get an even layer on the whole skin.
- Spray the cabinet itself. Be sure to spray all of the edges so the skin won’t stick up once it is applied.
- Remove the tape immediately or when the adhesive dries.
- Wait ten minutes for the adhesive to dry so that the skin will adhere properly.

Today I’m going to teach you how to skin. First things first, what we want to do is get your cabinet and lay it on its side so you have a nice even surface for when you apply the skin. Most of our skins come pre-cut for you already, so you just find the correct skin. This one, being a vanity, will be a bay skin, so I have my bay skin right over here.
Next is you want to get some tape. We just use a green painter’s tape, and you’re going to want to tape off the finished edge of the cabinet on the face. Make sure it’s nice and on there and you don’t have any tape sticking on the edge, you just want to make sure you get as much glue as you can on the surface.
Then you’ll grab your glue, we use adhesive, you can either buy this at your local hardware store or you can even buy it from us as well. What I’ll do first is spray the skin (using horizontal strokes). Be sure to get a good even layer throughout the whole skin.
Next I will spray on the cabinet itself. Make sure you get all of the edges around there so it doesn’t stick up on you. Then you’re going to want to remove this tape now or wait until the adhesive dries, and you’re going to want to wait at least ten minutes for the adhesive to dry. If you do it while it’s wet it doesn’t adhere very well. So we’ll wait about ten minutes for it to dry and we’ll come back to it.
